What You Will Need:

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paint Brushes in various sizes
  • Mod Podge in a matte finish
  • Embellishments like google-y eyes
  • Ribbon for hanging

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup table salt
  • 3/4 cups warm water

Instructions

1. Combine the flour, salt and water together in a large bowl. Mix the ingredients until well combined, it should feel like a play-dough consistency. If the dough is too wet, add in a tablespoon of flour until it reaches the proper texture. If it is too crumbly and dry, slowly add in water a tablespoon at a time.

2. Knead the dough with your hands to help strengthen the gluten structure. Plus, it’s fun for the kids to get their hands messy and play with the dough!

3. Grab a piece of parchment paper, dust it with flour and roll out the dough to a 1/4 inch in thickness. If the dough is sticking too much to your rolling pin, place a second piece of parchment paper on top of the dough, and continue to roll it out.

4. Once the dough is rolled out, dust the top of it with flour. Have your child place his or her hand or foot to make an imprint into the dough.

5. Carefully cut the imprint with a kitchen knife. You can also pierce a little hole to thread ribbon through for hanging at this point.

6. Place the imprint(s) onto a cookie sheet with the parchment paper.

7. Bake in the oven for 2 hours at 200 degrees, or until cooked all the way through. To avoid cracking, it is best to not open the oven during the cooking process, introducing cooler air.

8. Remove the salt dough ornaments from the oven and cool completely.

9. Decorate your Halloween salt dough ornaments with acrylic paint. Have fun and be creative! Some ideas are making your hands as a boo ghost, a pumpkin, vampire, spider, etc! Allow to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

10. Once you are done decorating your Halloween salt dough ornament and the paint has dried completely, paint a layer of Mod Podge in a matte finish on top to seal everything and protect the ornament. Add any embellishments like google-y eyes at this point too.

11. Thread a ribbon through the hole you cut and tie a bow. Congratulations, your completed your Halloween salt dough ornament! Cherish this halloween inspired craft for years to come!
